Objectives

Through project ECOMOME, we propose to address the scientific challenges and societal concerns related to the environmental impact of mobile networks. For this, we define three specific objectives:

O1: Conduct the first independent study on mobile network energy consumption, considering both the radio access infrastructure and the user devices.

O2: Propose clear and accurate models for the energy consumption of mobile networks, customizable to a number of scenarios, and ready to assist policy makers and regular citizens in estimating the environmental impact of mobile services.

O3: Design and evaluate energy-aware network management solutions, in synergy with and taking advantage of recent zero-touch network and service management paradigms and associated network intelligence algorithms

Specific objectives of UPT

Developing and extracting energy consumption profiles at the level of mobile devices and the applications running on them.

Setting up the measurement stand and conducting measurement campaigns for the radio module/interface of a mobile device under real operating conditions.

Developing a prototype for measuring 4G/5G consumption at the bare-metal level (component and signal level) using an external 4G/5G communication module.

Investigating various use cases for applications utilizing network communications and mobile devices (sensors and IoT, inference and data analysis algorithms, image processing and analysis, etc.).
